G

gross gambling revenue (GGR) Handle less payouts or prizes or winnings returned to players. From the operators point of view, gross revenue is money extracted from players collectively and transferred to the operator(s) of a commercial game; GGR is thus the source of gambling industry revenues and government gambling tax receipts. From the consumer`s point of view, GGR is the consumer price of playing a commercial game. Win, takeout, retention, and net receipts are in various systems of accounting synonyms for gross gambling revenue. Unlike handles, which are measures of wagering volumes and thus partial functions of the velocity of Euros (or cycle times) through gambling games, GGRs are measures of the economic value of gambling: its cost to consumers, and its worth to operators. Gross gambling revenues, NOT handles, are the statistics through which one form of gambling may be compared to another, to other businesses, other industries, other forms of consumption, and to the general economy.

H

hand pay Money award paid by an attendant rather than being dispensed by the machine.

handle The gross amount wagered at any form of gambling. Gross wagering, betting, gross betting or gross amount bet, money staked, turnover and lottery sales are in various systems of accounting synonyms for handle. Distinction between drop and handle: Handle is the total amount wagered, or bet: a chip may be wagered many times before the game goes to a decision and the chip is won or lost. Casinos generally report handle only for slot operations.

hold-and-respin-game A slot game that permits the player to hold the results of one or more reels and spin the remaining reels a second time in an attempt to improve the result.

hold percentages Hold percentages for table games are ratios of win to drop. Table games typically win (hold) 12% to 20% of drop (and as high as 25%) in market monopolies (e.g. early Atlantic City, Foxwoods) depending on the kind of game, odds and conditions of play, and player choice in games where different propositions have different house advantages, as in craps, or where conditions of play, as for example the number of decks used to deal blackjack, vary in ways that materially affect outcomes. Hold percentages should not be confused with percentages used to express house or casino advantages for table games.

hopper Assembly inside the machine that receives, holds and dispenses coins. When the hopper is full, coins are diverted to the drop box.

host machine A machine used in conjunction with another assembly that cannot stand alone, such as dual-monitor module or a bill acceptor.

house/casino advantage or expected value House/casino advantages or expected values for table games are stated as percentage of handle, not as percentage of drop. For example the expected value of Nevada and Atlantic City roulette is 5.26%, approx. 1% to 1.2% for baccarat and so forth.

The term is typically used to describe video poker games which theoretically return 100 percent or more of wagers when played using perfect strategy, and often refers to a game in which cashback awards are combined with near-100 percent payback to turn the overall edge to the player's favour.

progressive A system of pooling a fraction of each wager into a cumulative fund which is available for a top-pay win.

progressive jackpot A jackpot which increments electronically with a preset percentage of each coin wagered.

rapid bonus progressive (RBP) A progressive configuration that can increment and pay on up to x levels of winning combinations, rather than just the top and second level.

reel stop A single position - a symbol or blank space - on which a reel stops in the outcome of a slot game. Traditional mechanical reels had 22 or 25 reel stops. Computerized slot machines have simulated, "virtual" reel stops.

virtual reel technology The system used by all modern slot machines that enables computerized selection of reel results. Also known as the "Telnaes patent" (named for its inventor), the method involves assigning a series of different numbers in a computer program to any one given combination of reel symbols, indefinitely expanding the universe of numbers from which a game outcome is chosen by a random number generator. It is a computer simulation of a physical reel that is perhaps a mile long.

volatility The ratio of size versus frequency of jackpots in a slot game.
